Don’t Waste Money on Heat Pumps That Always Run in Pelican Bay, FL

You rely on your heat pump to keep you cool in Pelican Bay, FL, but you don’t expect it to run constantly in order to do so. The average heat pump, if well-maintained, should cycle two or three times an hour, each cycle lasting 10 to 15 minutes. If your heat pump cycles for longer than 15 minutes or practically never shuts off, that can indicate one of the following problems.

Dirt and Debris on the Coils

Your heat pump has two coils, an evaporator coil in the air handler and a condenser coil in the compressor. In cooling mode, the first coil absorbs heat from your home, and the second releases it outside. However, both coils can get covered in dirt and debris and never remove that heat, causing the system to run forever without cooling your home.

To avoid dirt build-up in the evaporator coil, make sure to change your air filter every 90 days. As for the compressor, you can clear away fallen leaves and trim any shrubs that hit against it; otherwise, have a professional clean the condenser coil during a maintenance visit.

A Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is the chemical that makes heat transfer possible in the first place. The pipes that carry it can corrode, though, and leak. With low refrigerant levels, the heat pump will run on and on because all it’s doing is circulating warm air.

An Undersized Unit

Heat pumps have a specific blowing capacity that makes them appropriate for buildings of a certain square footage. If your home is too large for your heat pump to handle, expect long cycles and uneven cooling.
